Paul and Barnabas established churches in southern Galatia (present day Turkey) on their first missionary journey. False teachers had come to Galatia and preached a different gospel, one that required the reintroduction of Judaic practices, mostly, circumcision, in order for the Gentile Christians in Galatia to truly be part of the "Israel of God." Paul's presents in this letter that faith in Christ accomplishes both justification and sanctification, arguing against these false teaching in a most sophisticated way.
