But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. - 1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. - 1 Peter 2:9

In this epistle, Peter encourages the Lord’s people as they endure suffering for the sake of righteousness.  These new Gentile congregations in Asia Minor, current day Turkey, were enduring significant suffering due to persecution and alienation from the corrupt culture in which they lived. Peter describes them as God’s people—chosen, holy, and supremely precious to the chief Shepherd, the Lord Jesus.  He exhorts them to forget their old lives and live holy lives while they wait for their promised salvation to come.  Peter teaches them to know Christ as the Head and the Cornerstone, and like true priests to sacrifice themselves to God as Christ sacrificed himself.
