The Intersection of Pop Culture & Christianity
Dr. van Voorhis will discuss the ways in which Christians might engage mass/popular culture. And it probably isn't what you think. Dr. van Voorhis will discuss how the "two kingdoms" paradigm has been lazily slapped onto complex questions about culture. He will also discuss how the church has been shackled with a new law when it comes to finding "redemption" and Christ-figures in every thing they watch or read. How does one "justify" getting into the swamps of mass/popular culture? Dr. van Voorhis will broaden out the definition of "pop" culture to discuss everything from The Walking Dead, Star Wars, and Harry Potter to jazz, modern art and classics in 20th century classic American literature.
It won't be your normal "Christians and Culture" discussion. Come ready to be challenged and to think about looking at the world in a way you may have thought too dangerous, or too "un-Christian" before.
Dr. Daniel van Voorhis is an Associate Professor and Chair of History and Political Thought at Concordia University in Irvine. He is also the co-host of the “Virtue in the Wasteland” podcast available weekly via iTunes and at virtueinthewasteland.com.
